The first sheep and goats were domesticated in Iran as early as 8,000 BC, and 6,000 BC, their breeding began on the Apennine Peninsula, in the south of France and in North Africa. Cattle appeared on farms around 6,000 BC in Anatolia and Macedonia, and around 4,000 BC in the Balkans. The tradition of cheese-making dates back to 7500 BC. Based on archaeological research, it was determined that it was then that the oldest cheese in the world, resembling today's mozzarella, was created. Interestingly, this took place not in France or Switzerland, countries that are considered the forerunners of cheesemaking, but in today's Poland.
